The First Landing State Park crew, led by Sean, has been making great progress on the new bridge this week. Another day or two, weather permitting, and the deck should be finished.

Brown-headed Nuthatch
Notice the stout bill of the Brown-headed. Unlike the Red-breasted Nuthatch and the White-breasted Nuthatch, the BHNU is able to excavate its own cavity in which to nest (as long as the wood is a little rotten). It is not a woodpecker after all!

Osprey Are Not Always Friendly to Man
Today the First Landing pair chased a Great Blue Heron and a Red-shouldered Hawk away from their nest territory. Last summer in Westport Harbor, Massachusetts this adult did its best to discourage me from temporarily removing its offspring from its nest to draw a blood sample to test for agchemicals. Many Shorebirds Have Auxiliary Color Markers
I found this Red Knot foraging on a mussel flat near Chatham, Massachusetts in August 2006. The blue flag denotes that this bird was first captured in Brazil. Indeed, this Knot had been banded near the mouth of the Amazon River several years previous. The bird had also been re-sighted elsewhere. The reporting of marked birds, whether seen on live birds or found on dead individuals, is critical to scientific research and public policy decisions.
